Troop 20 Scouts working on their Second Class Rank Advancement assembled at Mission Trails Regional Park to complete the 5 mile hike using the map and compass on a hot July morning.  Starting at the parking lot across from the Kumeyaay Lake campground, the Scouts crossed the San Diego River and the open grasslands area and then climbed up to the top of North Fortuna Mountain, elevation, 1291 ft. 

 

Departing after a short map and compass lesson around 8:00 AM in the cool of the morning,  they reached the summit around 10:30 AM, stopping several times to spread out the map and take their bearings.  The trip down was very hot, with the willow trees along the river providing a big relief. 

 

Once back at the cars around 11:30 AM or 12:00 PM, the Scouts cooled off with a water-bottle shower.
