Six Scouts and six adults made the overnight backpack trip to Noble Canyon during the fabulous weather of mid-November. Alex, Edward, Stephen, Eric, Clay, and Kieran made the trip. The group met at 7am at the Scout room and stopped for breakfast at Janet’s Montana Café for breakfast in Alpine before continuing on to the Penny Pines Trailhead on Sunrise Highway.
We had been warned that because of the Extreme Fire Danger condition and the recent 2007 wildfires that even campstoves would note be permitted, so all backpackers carried cold food for the night.
We had been told that there was no water, but there was some water, albeit less than usual at the campsite where we trypically overnight, approximately halfway through the 10 mile trail.
With night coming early and no opportunities for a campfire, most were in bed early and got a good night’s sleep after a full day of walking. The next morning, the remainder of the trail took about 4 hours to hike, with a stop at an old mining cave to explore. This was a great overnight trip for several of the junior scouts.
Lunch was at the Frosty Burger in Pine Valley! Great time! |
