The Troop assembled at 3PM at the Scout Room and were on the road to Palm Springs between 3:30PM and 4PM. Participating in the weekend were Scouts Nick, Steven, Mike, and Clay. Adults making up the group included Clyde, Dan, Frances, Dave, Mike, and Hiro. Mike F. and Clay joined us on Saturday. We worked our way through the traffic and arrived in Palm Springs near the Tramway road and had dinner around 6:30PM at a Carl’s Jr. for burgers and burritos. We were able to make the 7:30PM Tram up the mountain as the sun was setting. It had been a warm day and only a bit cool on the mountain. The moon was just a few days short of full, so the Troop was blessed with plentiful moonshine as they worked their way from the (cont.) |

Mountain Tram station up the trail to Round Valley and the meadow. We arrived there at around 10PM after about a two hour hike that rarely required a flashlight. The trail follows Long Valley Creek which we only heard but didn’t see. Another Boy Scout Troop was on the same Tram, and camped nearby at the western end of the Meadow near the water source. Saturday Morning we were up early and cooked up a nice breakfast before departing camp at about 9AM for the summit. After a stop at Welman’s Divide we continued to the summit arriving at around 11:30AM. We visited the stone cabin built there by the CCC in the ‘30’s before lunching on the collection of bolders that makes up the summit. The weather was beautiful warm and virtually no wind. People were sunbathing and enjoying the views with scarcely a cloud in the sky. We started down around 12:30PM and returned to the camp around 3:00 PM. The ranger told us we needed to move to a “legal” campsite at the other end of the meadow. A fine meal, a game of pass the pig, and a guess-the-movie game round out the evening before everyone turned in not too long after sunset. Most everyone was up at 6AM and after a light breakfast broke camp and got water on our way down the mountain. We took the 10:20AM tram down the mountain. Around 11:30 we stopped on I-10 for a lunch at the “Dinosaur” place. We were back at the Scout Room around 2PM. Great weather this weekend! |
