The Ski Trip this year was one of our most well-attended trips in a long time with a total of 20 people making the trip up to Big Bear and the Snow Summit Ski resort. This was the third year the Troop has gone up to Big Bear - other pictures and reports can be seen on the Troop web site.
Tem organized the trip, but was unable to attend because of a knee injury playing football this year. Attending were: Alex and his Dad Larry, John, Thomas and his Dad Tom, Erik, Travis, Stephen and his Dad Dave, Will with his cousin James and his Dad Jerome, Mike and Dad Dan, Edward and Dad Tim, Clayton and Dad Mike, Charlie and Dad Calman.
We met at the Scout Room at 5pm and departed at around 5:30pm in four vehicles. Traffic was lighter than we had expected. We stopped for dinner near Sun City and made good time. As we worked our way up the mountain we stopped to put our chains on and continued at a slow pace through the twisted road up to Big Bear. There was snow and ice on the roads from recent snows. We arrived in Big Bear at 11pm as the Big Bear Vacations Office was closing - just in time to get our key.
The cabin was located at 733 Summit Blvd just a short walk from the Snow Summit resort. With the large turnout for this event we found ourselves camping out inside the cabin that slept 10 - everyone brought sleeping bags and pillows and made use of the floor space in addition to the beds.
Everyone got a good start in the morning getting up, having some breakfast of Egg Buritos and off to the slopes as they opened around 8:30am. Those that didn't bring equipment rented at the slopes. The weather was great - even a little warm in the afternoon. Most came back to the condo for lunch and a rest, leaving some clothing behind. Some of the scouts new to the slopes took lessons.
The weather reports on the TV were for a winter storm warning with bad weather coming in. The weather channel showed rain already in San Diego and the skies darkened at the close of the day. So, a large group who had not planned to ski on Sunday departed on Saturday evening to beat the weather, arriving home around 11pm.
